HUSBAND'S CREDIT CARD, A LITTLE CHIKANKARI AND A LOT OF COURAGE
Makers Best By Priyanka began its journey when I quietly used my husband’s credit card to purchase chikankari fabrics from Lucknow, with a plan to sell them during Octoberfest Celebrations in Secunderabad Club, in October 2012. Despite having no background in business (let alone entrepreneurship) or prior experience, I set up my first stall, duly assisted by my grumpy house maid, my happy go lucky cook and my skeptical, but supportive husband. Fortunately, my choice of designs and colours were appreciated and the response of the customers was quite encouraging. I immediately reinvested all the money earned in buying new stock, leaving my poor incredulous husband to settle the credit card bill. Gradually, I started selling my collection from clubhouse to clubhouse and also participated in numerous exhibitions in Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Vizag. I cemented my business venture by opening our first shop inside Secunderabad Cantonment in December 2014, specializing in handloom fabrics (Ikat, Benarasi and Kota Doria), hand embroidered fabrics (Maggam, Chikankari, Phulkari, Parsi Gara and Kaantha), as also hand printed fabrics (Ajrakh, Bagh, Kalamkari, Bagru and Dabu) and readymade garments for ladies. In due course we diversified into customized tailoring, to cater to the demands of our discerning customers. Today, we are based in Sainikpuri, Secunderabad and can boast of a healthy clientele which appreciates our collection of fabrics from around the country, coupled with our high quality of customized stitching. A NEW CHAPTER IN SERVICE - ONE UNIFORM AT A TIME
Having taken premature retirement from the Army in May 2015, I found myself at a crossroads—one chapter had come to an end, but perhaps another was waiting to be written. By then, my wife Priyanka, had already established herself in the world of fabrics and customized garments, turning her passion into a growing enterprise. I, after a lifetime in uniform, eventually found myself drawn towards a field that was strangely familiar—and yet entirely new: school uniforms. In 2022, I ventured into the manufacture and sale of quality school uniforms. Thus began Makers Best.
The idea was simple: to provide children with uniforms that are well-made, comfortable, durable and worthy of the institution they represent. But as with most worthwhile journeys, the venture gradually grew beyond its original plan.
In 2024, we expanded our range to include textbooks and stationery, and Maker’s Best began evolving from a school-uniform business into a one-stop destination for the everyday educational needs of students.
Over the years, we have been fortunate to earn the trust of some wonderful institutions, including Army Public School R.K. Puram, Army Public School Bolarum, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Sainikpuri, St. Thomas School Ammuguda, Taraporewalla Montessori School Banjara Hills and Times Kids A.S. Rao Nagar.
For us, these associations represent far more than a list of clients. They represent trust placed in our work, confidence in our products and relationships built over time. And in a business such as ours, we believe that is the finest measure of success.
From uniforms to books, from notebooks to stationery, our endeavour has remained the same—to make a child's journey to school a little simpler for parents, a little better for students, and a little more dependable for the institutions we serve.
Today, Maker’s Best has grown into a one-stop destination for the educational needs of students, bringing together quality products, dependable service and the experience of understanding what schools and families expect.
And sometimes, looking back, I wonder whether I ever really left the Army. Perhaps I simply changed the colour of the uniform, the wearer, and the arena.
The olive green is still a part of who I am. Today, it lives on in every uniform we make.
What began as a new chapter in 2022 continues to grow—one school, one student, and one uniform at a time.
